KS3 CURRICULUM

The History Department seeks to cultivate within our pupils a passion for learning about the past that will extend beyond their time in St Ronan’s College. At KS3 the department offers a broad curriculum, exploring a variety of historical eras and topics that encourage pupils to recognise some of the forces and factors that have shaped the world we live in today.

Throughout years 8, 9 and 10, pupils are given the opportunity to engage with history in an active and critical way, enabling them to analyse and assess evidence, and articulate sound conclusions both orally and in writing.

Year 8 study

In year 8 pupils are introduced to skills they will use to study History, such as chronology, using sources and historical investigation. They will be able apply and refine these skills in their study of the Normans and the Black Death.

Year 9

In year 9 pupils will explore the early modern era of History. Focus will be placed on key events in Europe, before looking further afield at the development of the slave trade.

  • The plantation of Ireland

Year 10

In year 10 pupils will explore key events within the 20th Century. Pupils will be provided the opportunity to complete both independent and group research tasks on key events within this period of time piece before moving onto explore the partition of Ireland and life in Nazi Germany

KS4 CURRICULUM

At KS4 there is currently one pathway offered by the department:

  • GCSE History (CCEA)

The specification contains 3 units of study:

  • Life in Nazi Germany, 1933-45
  • Northern Ireland and its Neighbours, 1965-98
  • Outline study: International Relations, 1945-2003

KS5 CURRICULUM

At Post 16 there are two pathways offered by the department:

  • A Level History (CCEA)
    • AS1: Germany 1919-1945
    • AS2: Russia 1914- 1941
    • A21: The American Presidency 1901-2000
    • A22: Partition of Ireland 1900-1925
  • A Level Government and Politics (CCEA)
    • The Government and Politics of Northern Ireland
    • The British Political Process
    • A Comparative Study of the Government and Politics of the United States of America and the United Kingdom
    • Political Power

EXTRA CURRICULAR

KS3:

  • Pupils can avail of the History Debate club every Monday afterschool, exploring a number of controversial themes and events of the past

KS4

  • Educational visits: Walls of Derry, Playhouse theatre workshop
  • GCSE revision sessions (Term 2 onwards)

KS5

  • A level conference:
